US President Donald Trump said "massive" oil, gas and mineral exploration is set to begin in "our new and beautiful Greenland" early on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear what exploration or developments the US president was referring to in his post, and Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, rather than a part of the United States.

Trump posted on social media following a campaign event on Tuesday in Wasilla, Alaska, to stump for Republican US Senator Dan Sullivan as he seeks his third term to represent the state in an election against Democratic former US congresswoman Mary Peltola.

Rising energy prices - a direct result of Trump's war in Iran - are creating serious and sustained financial hardships for America's working class ahead of the midterm elections next month. Trump's comments on Wednesday are likely aimed at addressing voters' concerns before they head to the polls.

But despite Trump's optimism, resource exploration and extraction in Greenland have stymied companies for decades thanks to the island's harsh climate, lack of key infrastructure and difficult geology. Previous efforts to extract so-called rare earth minerals, as well as oil and gas, have never progressed beyond the exploratory stage.

Trump's comments about the Arctic island come less than a month after he signed an agreement with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic following months of tensions with Nato allies over the US president's repeated demands to take control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory. It does not grant the US any special exploration rights, but does place some limits on investments by non-Nato countries in strategic sectors.

Neil Young is suing Donald Trump’s political action committee Trump 47 Committee Inc for $10m (£7.47m) over alleged copyright infringement of his song Rockin’ in the Free World after the US president used it as walk-up music in recent midterm election rallies.

It is the second time that Young has filed against one of Trump’s organisations over his unlicenced use of the song. He first did so in 2020, against the corporation Donald J Trump for President Inc. Trump settled, promising, according to Young’s suit, that his organisation “would never again use Rockin’ in the Free World without a license and permission from Young”.

Donald Trump's ratings hit a record low last night – hours before Americans vote today in elections expected to cause a Republican Party bloodbath. Some 56 per cent of voters 'disapproved' of the US President's performance, compared with just 41 per cent who 'approved', a survey showed. This left Mr Trump with a net approval rating of -15 points – the lowest of his two terms in office, pollster Morning Consult said.

Almost half of all voters, 46 per cent, said they 'strongly disapproved' of Mr Trump – more than twice the 22 per cent who said they 'strongly approved'. The gap between those strongly opposed to the president and those firmly behind him reached its widest ever, illustrating how politically polarised the United States has become.

The Republicans are expected to suffer heavy losses in the midterm elections today. The opposition Democratic Party led the polls last night on 50 per cent, compared with 43 per cent for the Republicans.

Supporters of the ruling party are increasingly dissatisfied – just 68 per cent believing it was heading in the right direction, down from 73 per cent four weeks ago and 82 per cent at the start of 2025.
